Case Study
Kirkby Stephen Station
In 2003, Settle & Carlisle Railways Trust negotiated the acquisition to the station building at Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria on similar terms to the other stations and was awarded substantial grants for the restoration work. The release to the Trust company was completed on 9th December 2003. Work started on 15th March 2004 and was completed in 2005.
The restored station building has suites of offices on the ground and first floors (both now let) and has a two-bedroom caretakers’ flat. It also has an exhibition and meeting room, known as the Midland Railway Room, with some interesting and historic pictures and memorabilia. Facilities for rail users have been substantially improved. The restored building was formally opened on 22nd March 2005 by HRH The Prince of Wales, a great honour for the Line and the Trust.
